We're excited to bring you another in a series of profiles to introduce you to a few of our artisans coming to the 7th Annual Crafty Mart Holiday Show on Saturday and Sunday, November 28th-29th. This is just one in a series of Vendor Spotlights where we let those who will be sharing their wares shine a light on what it is they do. The following profile is Mike from Made By Mike Treats and his response to a mini-questionnaire.
1). What's your name and what is it that you make?
Michael Derr, Chief Caramel Officer at Made By Mike Treats. I make handmade, small-batch, artisanal caramels.
2). How did you acquire the unique skill set to do what it is you do?
I've always loved to bake and make food for my friends. I've also had my own food blog for many years where I featured some of my favorite recipes, mostly desserts. After much prodding from family and friends I began my own small baking business which became Made By Mike Treats. While baking has always been fun for me, the day I made my first batch of Apple Cider Caramels, I knew I'd found something special. I then perfected a basic vanilla caramel that created a foundation for other flavors to come, such as Salted Espresso, Cinnamon Dolce, Autumn Spice, Gingerbread, and more.
3). What is your best seller?
My best seller is the classic Sea Salted Caramel. Followed closely by the Apple Cider Caramel. All the taste of a caramel apple without the danger of the stick. I take eight cups of apple cider and reduce it down to an intense one cup of cider. Cinnamon and sea salt add a nice compliment to the sweet apple.
4). How long have you been vending? Have you done a Crafty Mart show before?
I've been selling my caramels for three years. This year will be my third year at Crafty Mart. It's my favorite place to sell my caramels. The first year I sold out in two hours. This year I'll be there both days with hundreds of bags of caramels. You can also find me at many of the other Crafty Mart pop up shops throughout the year.
5). Coffee or tea?
Spiced orange tea with a big spoonful of local honey.
